Very nice build, eye-candy receiver in the midrange of the Marantz 22xx series. Easy to service. Very good soundstage. It never dissapoints me when i turn it on. I have the 2238 and 2238b version, and personally i think that the 2238 sounds better. Nowadays a rare find especially the black version. This one is not going to leave my collection.

The 2238 is a keeper. It's easy to service, sounds great and looks gorgeous. It's also going up in value as they are a bit rare. In service daily and has never failed. Highly recommended.

As I was changing the sparkplugs in my Rav4, my son came home with his buddy. They watched me for a while and then asked me to go with them to the back of the car they came home in. My son's buddy unveiled a Marantz 2238B. It belongs to the buddy's dad. I was asked if I would look at it. It is missing two feet, the power cord looks like a small dog died chewing on it and it is filthy inside. You know what I'll be doing for the next few weeks... ;)
Thanks to HiFiengine and YOU ALL, I do stand a chance in bringing this Marantz back to working order. ..

I had purchased a 2235 Marantz to get my 21 year old son set up for a good analog system with a turntable. After setting his up and listening to a number of vinyl records with him I was impressed to say the least. So then I went on a search to find another Marantz for myself. I was very fortunate in finding a one owner 2238B model that spent it's life in humidity free New Mexico. I've had it hooked up for about a week and a half now and I love it. It produces really warm and detailed sound at very low volume levels. Crank the volume up a bit and it responds with wonderfully clear sounds, just like the 2235 model I bought for my son. I'm listening through some Polk audio monitors which I've owned for at least 15 years now. The receiver just compliments the great sound of the Polk's, I'm also using my B&O Beogram RX2 which I purchased new around 1985. All in all I couldn't be happier with the sound. My only wish was for better FM signal reception. I live in an area with many stations to listen to that broadcast with plenty of tower signal but it just doesn't pull in as strong as I'd like. Any tips on what I could do would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Looks fantastic with all the lights working. Cleanly built and wired interior.
Great tuner with warm but detailed very listenable sound. The tuner captures many stations cleanly using simple dipole wire FM antenna. Easy tuning with the meters and gyro tuning wheel.
Very flexible connections with two tape inputs and aux for a digital source.
Great low and mid-frequency detail with relatively tight bass with suitable speakers.
Can provide shimmering highs for excellent jazz reproducton.
Note that the mono switch affects all inputs, not just the FM.
Highly recommended with involving but nonfatiguing sound for a vintage system.

For weeks I've been looking for a vintage Marantz receiver on eBay to use with my Pioneer PL-7 turntable. I've been biding on a bunch of them but I was always outbid and never got one. I started to get frustrated with eBay's biding system but I was not giving up until I could get a Marantz receiver. But something amassing happened last Sunday. I was coming home from church and when turned onto my street I saw a Marantz receiver model 2238B on top of a pile of bulk trash that my neighbor was throwing away. Of course I hit the breaks hard (scaring everybody in the car) and jumped out of car to grab (should I say, “saveâ€) that Marantz receiver from the unfair pile of trash.
I took it home, cleaned and made sure everything was OK before plugging it to AC, and to my surprise the receiver what very clean inside and outside with basically no scratches. The interior was very clean and all componentes seamed to be the originals. I didn't see any signs of re-solders in inside. Besides spraying the dust from inside and cleaning the outside, the only thing I had to do was to clean the volume potentiometer with contact cleaner. The receiver looks like with everything working and the sound is amazing. I'm using it to play my classic rock vinyls with my turntable.
With this luck, I think I should got to church more often :-)
